To the boys who became brothers – DR, MS, JK, SC, WD, AM, JL, JC, CD, JW, SB:
Who’d have thought it’s been 4 years since most of us all came together?
I love thinking back to how our friend group started. DR and I leaving our door open, and the slow trickle in of a few of you as we tried to figure out what to do in our first days of college. I look back on some of the fondest memories of my life with you guys. I really don’t know what I would have done in college without you all.
There were times where I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked to with some of you, and for that I apologize. I especially think back to sophomore year when I felt pretty absent from you guys a lot of the time because I was still getting my priorities straightened out and learning how to balance everything. But I’m thankful for the times I can look back on.
For example, the Bible study from freshman year that was actually the motivation for me starting this blog. Or the late nights that it felt like everybody except me would play FIFA on my Xbox (I understand that you just didn’t want to lose to me though). Or getting slapped awake because I overslept and was going to be late to Calculus – and I don’t mean lightly slapped, I’m talking full-on slapped… I still wake up flinching in fear sometimes. Or the endless pranks/prank wars (I still think mine wins – picture below). The Snow Bowl during the great snowstorm of 2016 (photo also below). So many more.
I could say a lot of things to you guys. Mainly, I just want to say thank you. I’ve heard a lot of stories about how it’s really tough sometimes to find the right friend group in college. But I’ve also heard a lot about how important it is to be surrounded by some really great people.
You all know I’m a strong believer in how we are shaped by the people we spend the most time with. You guys were all some of the closest friendships I formed throughout college, and you all shaped me a lot. I can truly say that I’m a better person as a result of my friendship with each and every one of you. Even though I think you all, at one point, insisted that I’m an extrovert, my introverted self did a lot of sitting back and noticing the nuances of what makes each of you who you are. Also things that I would like to take into my life. So I want to take some time to just go through and say what I appreciated so much of each of you and what I want to carry over into my life:
DR – Your big heart and your willingness to do whatever you can, whenever you can to help out your friends. You have such an ability to encourage and pick up.
MS – Your work ethic is ridiculous. I shared a lot of classes and work with you, but I don’t know many people who work as hard as consistently as you.
JK – Your humility in leadership is so admirable. Seeing the work you did in normal classes and Collab was amazing, what always amazed me more is that, in your head, it never seemed to be about you.
SC – Your goofiness mixed with your drive. It seems ironic to combine these things, but you displayed the times that we shouldn’t take life too seriously, but also the time to buckle down and crank out work.
WD – Your taste in music and movies is absolutely unmatched. You were one of those people who just seemed to know the right time to ask if we wanted to watch a movie.
AM – Your presence. You were one of those people who just seemed to be there when you were needed. And in those times you were there, you just always managed to be able to make people smile.
JL – Your passion – be it towards what you were learning, politics, or.. yes.. even sports (*clap, clap, clap* LET’S GOOO!), – has always been something I’ve admired about you.
JC – Your kindness. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard an unkind word from your mouth. I don’t think I’ve ever really heard you say anything mildly unkind even jokingly.
CD – Your perseverance. I got to see a lot of roadblocks rise up between you and your work with Collab and otherwise sometimes, but I also saw you always push to find a solution and to never give up.
JW – Your insight and ability to listen to your friends is incredible. I always loved how any time I came to you to talk about something, you wisely asked, “Do you want me to give advice or do you just want me to listen?”
SB – Your wit and creativity in the jokes you made with us and the artwork that you continue to do has always been great. I’ll never forget the squiggly box and conspiracy theories.
Basically put: I love you guys. I’ve seen you guys grow a lot. I just hope you’ve seen me grow too. If you have, I hope you know that you were all instrumental in that. I’ll never forget your guys’ influence on my life, and I can’t thank you enough.
I’m really thankful for all of you guys and I can’t wait to see where life takes all of us. I’ll be praying for all of you, and I hope to see you guys plenty as we continue in life.
Love you all,
PS: To God be the Glory.
